X-Ray Vision

Eriez E-Z Tec X-Ray Inspection System

Eriez offers a way for customers to view the performance of an X-Ray machine live online. This eliminates the need for an on-site facility visit. Customers will virtually attend the material test in real time with Eriez’ interactive online X-ray testing via a password-protected website. Participants will see their products passing through an E-Z Tec X-Ray Inspection System to determine its performance for foreign object detection, mass, fill level, or missing items. Multiple viewers can watch from different locations and ask questions of test personnel. The X-ray Systems uses linear array technology. X-ray systems monitor product and package attributes such count, mass, fill level, fat analysis, broken or damaged product, as well as detecting unwanted metals, stone, glass, bone, and some plastics. Eriez produces a complete line of metal detectors. For more information about online X-ray testing, call 888.300.3743, or e-mail the company.

Let's Get Small

Schunk Tribos-RM micro-machining toolholder

Separate laws apply for micro-machining, which is why SCHUNK offers the TRIBOS-RM precision toolholder as a solution for micro machining with ISO interface. The one-piece, rotationally symmetric design ensures the complete transmission of power. Compared with heat shrink tool clamping, the TRIBOS-RM offers tool clamping that will not distort the toolholder. The unit has a precise run-out accuracy of less than 0.003mm, which is useful with small tools for micro-machining. The TRIBOS-RM is designed for high spindle speeds of up to 60,000 rpm in high-speed cutting involved in micro-machining. Sizes ISO 10 D 1mm to  6mm are available. The balancing grade is G 2.5 at 25,000 rpm.

A VMC Big Boy

Mazak's FJV-35/60 II double-column vertical machining center

Mazak's FJV-35/60 II is a double-column, vertical machining center designed for the high-speed, high precision production of large workpieces. Suitable for a wide range of industries, including aerospace, construction, die and mold, and heavy machining, the FJV-35/60 II accommodates up to 5,500 lb on a 59.1"×31.5" work table. It has a 50 taper, 40 hp, 10,000 rpm integrated spindle that generates up to 433 ft-lbs of torque for heavy duty cutting of large cast iron, steel, and aluminum workpieces. In the manufacture of an A5052 aluminum  aircraft beam, cutting time is reduced by 40 percent compared to previous models. Similarly, the cutting time in the manufacture of an FC300 cast iron sprocket is reduced by 20 percent. ATC tool chip-to-chip time is also reduced from 7.5 seconds to 5 seconds. The machining center is available with a 5-face machining option, which uses a spindle indexable by 90°, a special angle tool capable of automatic tool change, and an angle tool holder that can be indexed in four positions. It uses roller guides on all axes for feedrates of 1,574 ipm in the X- and Y-axes and 1,181 ipm in the Z-axis. The machining center's direct-drive ball screw system boosts high accuracy roundness to 5µm with a feedrate of 22 ipm compared to previous models. It also features a larger envelope thanks to an extended Z-axis stroke of 25.98", enabling the machining of workpieces with heights up to 25.2" in height, as well self-cuts of fixture plate surfaces.

That's Going to Leave a Mark

Technifor's XF520Cp portable marking machine

The Technifor XF520Cp portable marking machine provides marking at speeds up to 10 characters per second, handling a range of part-marking and identification applications, including serial numbers, logos, and machine readable DataMatrix codes. It uses a 3.3"×1.75" integrated, backlit display and software that incorporates icons, menus, and graphical previews. Data entry errors are eliminated by transferring information from barcode scanners, CSV files, and computer networks. The integrated USB port allows for convenient backup of logos and marking files onto a memory stick. The XF520Cp lets operators mark objects of varying weights and sizes in hard-to-reach locations on any raw, machined, or painted material, such as metals, alloys, and plastics, and on flat, convex, or concave surfaces. Net weight is 5.3 lb; unit size is 5.2"×7.1"×3.7"; marking area is 2"׾". It comes with an external keyboard; memory capacity of more than 1,000 marking files; character size of 1/100" to 2"; fixed text, variables, date and time codes, counters, and other features.

When Going 'Tilt' is Good

The Tsudakoma RT-111,AA drop trunnion tilting rotary table

The Tsudakoma RT-111,AA available from Koma Precision, Inc., is a drop trunnion tilting rotary table where the top surface of the spindle is the center line of the tilt axis. Two pneumatic rotary joints on the rotary axis allow automated clamping/unclamping of the system 3R chuck and pallet system. The RTT-111,AA may be equipped with chuck and pallet systems from Hirschmann, Erowa, and other manufacturers. With more than 25,000 rotary table installations, Koma is the exclusive North American importer of Tsudakoma rotary tables, Alberti precision tooling, and Romai specialty tooling.
