HMC, See?

The Mitsui Seiki HPX-63 4-axis CNC horizontal machining center

Mitsui Seiki introduces the HPX-63 4-axis CNC horizontal machining center. Design criteria includes a work-size capacity featuring a swing diameter up to 1,050mm and a work height – the Y-axis – of up to 1050mm. Axis stroke is 1,000mm in X-axis and 900mm in Z-axis. The pallet size is 630mm. The B-axis rotary table offers 12 rpm. The rapid travel rates are 32m/min with 0.5g acceleration/deceleration. The cutting feed rate is 12m/min. Its box way axis slides are hardened, ground, and hand scraped. All assembly surfaces are hand scraped and fitted. Positioning accuracy and repeatability is 0.001mm. The unit can cut titanium, Inconnel, tool steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The spindle compensates for thermal changes and does not require a warm-up period. Nibble Away

The cordless TruTool N200 nibbler with Li-ion battery from TRUMPF

The TruTool N1500 hydraulic nibbler from TRUMPF can cut stainless steel sheets up to 15mm thick. Mainly, nibblers are used to dismantle heavy installations that are an explosion or a contamination risk. The tools offer distortion-free cutting, controlled chip discharge, and no significant warming. In contrast to angle grinders, nibblers do not generate sparks that would damage clean surfaces. Spark-free work is just as important in breaking down tanks that have been filled with oil or chemicals. The company brought three new nibblers of various sizes and performance capacities to market: the rapid TruTool PN130, the cordless TruTool N200 with Li-ion battery, and the flexible TruTool N500 with "reverse gear."

For Those Who Like it Rough

Celeritive Technologies’ VoluMill software for GibbsCAM

Celeritive Technologies’ VoluMill software for high-speed rough machining is now available for GibbsCAM. VoluMill uses the Celeritive Ultra-High Performance Toolpath algorithm to generate toolpaths based upon desirable material removal rates. The software develops toolpaths optimized for volumetric material removal by using continuous tangential motion, specialized contour ramping, and adaptive feedrates. By leveling tool load, maintaining constant machine-tool motion, and using high-speed repositioning, the software reduces cycle times. VoluMill is available immediately for the latest version of GibbsCAM. The application works on all solid, surface, and wireframe models, and any combination of part and stock boundaries. It supports an unlimited number of islands, tapered walls, variable pocket depths, and variable island heights. Features include programmed rate of material removal to keep tool and work piece temperature consistent, and to dissipate heat with chips; automatic feedrate adjustment and automatic depth of cut to maintain programmed material removal rate, eliminate excessive material conditions, and minimize tool wear, heat build up and vibration; smoothing radius to maximize tool utilization, minimize cycle time and extend programming flexibility; contour ramping to maximize material removal in tight areas, with safe access, while minimizing cycle time; high speed repositioning to maximize machine utilization and minimize cycle time For more information, call 800.654.9399, visit www.GibbsCAM.com, or e-mail info@GibbsCAM.com.

Fully-loaded HMC

MAG's modular HMC 1250 Series

MAG's modular HMC 1250 Series is an 180,000-position A-axis tilt spindle for 5-axis horizontal machining on large parts. The 6,000 rpm/61.6 hp tilt spindle joins an all-around 10,000 rpm/75 hp spindle, high-speed 24,000 rpm spindle, high-torque 1918 ft-lb spindle and two live spindles – 110mm or 130 mm diameter – as headstock options. The 80 kW spindle is suited for aerospace titanium cutting, while the live spindles extend W-axis reach by up to 31.5", enabling deep cavity milling with shorter, rigid tool lengths. Standard on the live spindle is the Z-axis thermal compensation software which dynamically offsets spindle growth to maintain tolerances. Major machine components, including the X-bed, Z-bed, and column are cast ductile iron, with 1250mm × 1600mm pallets, headstock and rotary table housings of gray cast iron. Modular design provides a range of machine travels, 60- to 120-tool magazines and two control choices, in addition to five spindle options, plus tilt capability. That application flexibility combines with a maximum 118" work zone swing range, 81" work height capacity, and 15,400 lb work load. The HMC offers 75 hp to 107 hp spindle power, 7,870 lb Z-axis thrust, and a full-contouring hydrostatic rotary table. It has a 1,575 ipm rapid traverse/feed rate and 15 sec tool change – for up to 35kg tools. A standard 360,000-position contouring table enables 4-axis machining. The HMC Series comes standard with linear scale feedback in X-, Y-, and Z-axes, providing 0.0003" positioning accuracy and 0.0002" repeatability. For more information, visit: www.mag-ias.com

A Different Slant

Mazak's Slant Turn Nexus 550M CNC turning center

Mazak's Slant Turn Nexus 550M is a CNC turning center designed for large part turning applications such as oil field pipes, pipeline control valves, turbine wheels, aircraft and off-road parts, and the production of power generating components for the aerospace, oil, gas, coal, and nuclear industries. The STN550M's headstock features a 10.8" bore mounted on a 60 hp, 1,000 rpm spindle generating up to 5,163 ft-lb of torque. The spindle is also used as a C-axis, capable of being indexed at 0.001" increments to accurately position the part for slotting cuts and precisely drilled holes. It has a 12-position drum turret for rapid tool indexing. The machine is also equipped with a 10 hp, 4,000 rpm high-speed milling spindle for roughing, grooving, endmilling, and facemilling operations. Total travels are 18.25" in the X-axis and 129.88" in the Z-axis, with a 40.7" swing capacity and a capacity steady rest of 16.14". The machine also features an NC servo-driven tailstock to enable automated processes. The tailstock is fully programmable, driving the W-axis on its own AC servomotor and ball screw. Through the part program, the tailstock will retract to a known position and its center makes contact with the part with consistent holding pressure. Because of its positive independent drive system, the tailstock can be used to drill holes on a shaft centerline. For more information, visit www.mazakusa.com.

Smooooth

CNC Software's latest release, Mastercam X4

CNC Software's latest release, Mastercam X4, provides expanded machining flexibility and an increased emphasis on speed and automation. It also introduces 3D surface toolpath refinement, a technique that delivers a finer finish on complex parts. Many multisurface toolpaths are made up of small linear moves that are within a part's machining tolerance. Visual marks or faceting can sometimes result as when these small linear moves line up, and the tool changes direction in a similar spot on each pass as the toolpath progresses. Mastercam’s 3D surface toolpath refinement solves this issue by redistributing the points where the tool changes direction to avoid marks and faceting. The refinement is done within whatever machining tolerance is set by the user. The result is a smoother finish, reducing or eliminating the need for hand polishing. For more information, visit www.mastercam.com.
