A Century of Features

CAMWorks 2009 solid-based CNC programming solution

CAMWorks 2009, from Geometric Technologies, is the latest version of a solid-based CNC programming solution. The release has more than 100 user-driven features and enhancements. It is available in a 64-bit version. Key enhancements include performance increases due to the ability to generate 3- to 5-axis toolpaths as separate thread, and in separate processes letting users continue working in other areas, or on other CAM models. Data reusability has been extended to enable the import of CAM data associated with part models into assembly models, so parts can be programmed and applied to different jobs. Library features can be created where only selected CAM data is to be reused in other jobs. It also features improved graphic display performance, performance improvements in part and machine simulation, and new XML-based user-defined setup sheet, which allows viewing of machining information in a web browser. Turning features and toolpaths have been made more intelligent. Wire EDM users will benefit from creation of multiple glue stops and a more powerful post processing environment. Simultaneous 4- and 5-axis improvements include toolpath control, expanded collision avoidance, and creation of multiple toolpaths using rotate and copy options. Tiny Foot

The DT-1 from Haas Automation, Inc.

The DT-1 from Haas Automation, Inc., is a compact, high-speed drill and tap machine with full milling capabilities. The machine features a 20"×16"×15.5" work cube and 26"×15" T-slot table, while maintaining a small footprint. A BT30 taper spindle spins to 15,000 rpm, and allows tapping at speeds to 5,000 rpm. The spindle is coupled directly to the motor. A 15-hp vector drive system provides 46 ft-lb – peak – of cutting torque for milling and boring operations. It is equipped with a high-speed, 20-pocket, servo-driven tool changer that swaps tools in 0.8 seconds. High-speed 2,400 ipm rapids combine with 1g acceleration rates. The maximum cutting feedrate is 1200 ipm. The DT-1 features steeply sloped internal sheet metal for chip removal. A 45-gal flood coolant system is standard, with options for a programmable coolant nozzle and high-pressure through-spindle coolant systems. Let the Sunnen-shine In

The Precision Hone tooling system from Sunnen Products

The Precision Hone tooling system from Sunnen Products is true to its name incorporating integral air gaging with an automatic shutdown mechanism for non-contact, in-process bore sizing to tolerances of 0.005 mm (0.0002 inch). PH tools use custom-designed and fitted multi-stone tool heads, with the number and placement of stones dictated by the application. Ideal for honing diesel cylinder liners, compressor cylinders, automotive engines, small engines and aircraft cylinder bores with diameters from 57 mm (2.25 in.) to 300 mm (12 in.). PH tools can be used with Sunnen or other manufacturers' machines and include three abrasive options – metal-bond superabrasive (diamond or CBN), conventional abrasive (aluminum oxide/silicon carbide) and plateau brush (abrasive impregnated filament). PH tools are made with high-quality steel components throughout, with long-life carbide guides/air jets. Bayonet air connections on the tool heads facilitate fast changeovers. The Precision Hone tool is a flexible tooling system and can be designed to connect to the rotary feed system of the Sunnen SV-310 for precision stone feeding, or the linear feed system of the Sunnen SV-500 for two-stage roughing and finishing applications. To Everything Turn, Turn, Turn Smart

The Quick Turn Smart series of 2-axis from Mazak Corp.

The Quick Turn Smart series of 2-axis from Mazak Corp., delivers fast axis feed rates, accuracy, and rigidity as well as a Mazatrol Smart control, targeting job shops and high production environments. The QT-Smaer 350's headstock features a 12" chuck, mounted on a 40-hp, 3,300-rpm integrated spindle motor. It delivers maximum torque of 596 ft-lbs and allows machining of 4" bar material. The turning center uses Roller LM guides on the X- and Z-axes and feedrates of 1,811 in/min on the X-axis and 1,299 in/min on the Z-axis. The machine also features X-axis ball screw pretension, as well as a 12-position, high-speed, non-lift drum turret for rapid tool indexing. The Mazatrol Smart controlis designed for ease of operation and offers a 10.4" LCD color display and the familiar QWERTY keyboard. A pointing device, acting like a mouse, and USB port for downloading programs are also available.

Traveling Pneumatic Drills

The Pneucon Selfeeder family of portable pneumatic drilling units from Sugino Corp.

The Pneucon Selfeeder family of portable pneumatic drilling units are specifically designed for the aerospace industry. The air-powered drills by Sugino Corp., are designed to provide tight T.I.R. less than 0.0006" and deliver 0.0008" repeatability on depths. The typical nose mount unit to be used in fixtures with precision collet holders and clocking bushing fixtures. The feeders have a precision machined turbine. They operate with positive air pressure in both forward and reverse directions and operate exclusively on compressed air for ease of use and safety. The unit is equipped to provide cutting oil directly at and through the tooling to the tool tip. Contact Sugino Corp. at 888-SUGINO-1.
